Hellabrunn Der Munchner Tierpark (The Munich Zoo)

Yesterday we visited the most beautiful zoo in Munich, Germany. The Munich Zoo Hellabrunn was founded in 1911 and is known as the first Geo-zoo in the world. Please click on the link above so if you ever come to Munich on a holiday (vacation) you can be sure to add that to your itinerary–we highly recommend it! It would be a good idea to wear some good walking shoes because the grounds are enormous.

In order to get to the zoo, we took the S-Bahn train into Munich, and exited at the Marienplatz. It was so crowded that you could hardly walk but we needed to get on the U-Bahn in order to get to the zoo. We finally made our way underground to the U-Bahn. It is actually pretty cool and it travels very fast.

Finally, we arrive at the zoo!

When you get into the zoo it only takes a few minutes to realize that the majority of the zoo is entirely outdoors. Keep in mind that is is early spring and the tree’s and flowers are just starting to grow and bloom. This is a shot over the small creek that flows throughout the zoo.

As we began our walk into the zoo the first animals we saw were the Giraffes.

Lance found the “Big Bad Wolf” and he was pretty big. The interesting part of this zoo is that there aren’t big “borders” around any of the animals living quarters. Usually water and a small hot wire holds them in and the people out. It is much different than any other zoo’s we’ve seen. Everyone appeared to obey the rules and we didn’t see anyone try to feed or touch any of the animals.

Delrae really loved this little creature. The German name is Pampashase oder Mara. These cute animals belong in the Guinea Pig family but they also resemble a rabbit. They are considered very social animals as you can see this guy was visiting the ducks. Feel free to click on the link to read more about them.

The monkey’s looked so happy in their natural habitat. Look at this mamma and her baby!

The next few photo’s are of the elephants their sanctuary. They were finishing eating and enjoying the sunny day. When you got up close to them, they were truly magnificent.

Look how relaxed this big cat is! Delrae really wanted to go in and pet him but Lance didn’t think it would be a good idea.

Zebras of course!

Yes, these are the strangest pigs we’ve ever seen. They sure were cute though. They are called a Bartschwein Bearded Pig. The unique pigs actually originate from Southeast Asia.

The next cool animals we came up to were the Indisches Panzernashorn, otherwise known as the Indian Rhinoceros. We got to see the daddy, mamma, and their baby! Please check out the slide show below.
